Charlie Byrd is widely known as the "Pied Piper of jazz." He was born in 1918 in rural North Carolina. He started playing violin at age four and by age ten, he had joined his first band, the Byrd Trio. By the time he was fifteen he had moved to New York City, where he became a professional musician. Charlie spent most of his adult life touring internationally with big bands led by Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Count Basie, and Duke Ellington
